Ancient Heritage Dairy

Ancient Heritage Dairy is a newly licensed sheep's milk dairy and cheesemaker located in Scio, Oregon (southeast of Salem).  Kathy and Paul Obringer are currently selling their cheeses in the Portland area at the Beaverton Farmer's Market and Portland's Thursday Farmer's Market (at the Ecotrust building).

Ancient Heritage wins the informal and honorary prize of being the first all-sheep's milk cheesemaker in Oregon. Sheep's milk cheesemakers are few and far between in the Northwest; Black Sheep Creamery is Washington's only sheep's milk exclusive cheesemaker, and Mountain Meadow shares the same distinction in British Columbia. That being said, a number of other cheesemakers are making sheep's milk or mixed milk (sheep + cow or sheep+goat) cheeses, including Monteillet Fromagerie, Salt Spring Island Cheese Co., and most recently Willamette Valley Cheese Co.

These two are making some great (!) cheese...the young manchego has amazing potential, and the camembert-style cheese (Bloomy Friesian) reminds me of the excellent northern Italian Robiolas I have encountered...and with the pure expression of Northwest terrior! - look for them soon at your local Market of Choice :-)

I was selling cheese at the ecotrust on a Thursday and had a chance to dash over to buy half a round of bloomy rind cheese from the Ancient Heritage booth. Really nice with lots of good sheep flavor and nicely aged too.
